There are several ginger varieties grown in Sri Lanka.
The local variety is the highest variety grown.It produces medium size size rhizomes.More fertile
The rhizomes are large in size. The harvest from an acre is higher than the local variety. This is also called rangoon variety. Farmers tempt to cultivate this variety upon the foreign demand and also changes through out the year.
It is ideal to start planting from March to May. Farmers prepare the soil before a month to start plantation. The soil has to be organic materials containing well water draining soil.
The small rhizomes of ginger (zingibera officinale) anti inflammatory that are used for the planting has to be very healthy. For that they dip the rhizomes in a fungicide and go for planting.
After planting the ginger finger rhizomes in the prepared soil, farmers cover the soil using hay or coconut leaves. This keeps the moisture of the plantation. It is very important to pull out the weeds completely.
The plantation basically depends on rain water. Further in some areas, surface watering can also be seen. It can generate a high income by ginger plantation. Like wise villagers basically put cow dung and goat droppings as the fertilizers to the the cultivation.
